Before we begin

What we mean by a systems solution.

The ideas in this space are about changing the conditions in which everyone operates — not just the experience of one person in one situation. Here's how to tell the difference.

What is a systems solution?

A systems solution addresses the rules, structures, policies, funding models, and infrastructure that determine what is possible across a whole school, a sector, or a jurisdiction. It is not a workaround — it is a change to the conditions that make workarounds necessary in the first place.

The key test is scalability: could this work for all — or most — neurodivergent learners, not just one child in one classroom with one particularly committed teacher? If the solution only works because of an individual's exceptional effort, goodwill, or resources, it is evidence that the system has failed to provide what it should — not a systems solution in itself.

Individual fix — not what we're building here

  • A parent negotiates a specific adjustment for their child
  • A teacher uses their own time and money to support a learner
  • A school makes a one-off exception for one family
  • A therapist bridges a gap the system should be filling

Systems solution — this is what we're here for

  • A policy requiring a continuous improvement cycle for neurodivergent learner support embedded in principals' accountability and reporting
  • A mandated amount of whole-of-school professional development around supporting neurodivergent learning
  • How could complaints be better managed as a means to improve the system — and ensure accountability follows?
  • A funding model that follows the learner — including into home education, because the need doesn't disappear just because the setting has changed

One important note: we are not looking for solutions that simply add more to an individual teacher's or learning support officer's list of responsibilities. They are already doing extraordinary work inside a system that chronically under-resources them. The goal is to find solutions that support and resource them — so that quality neurodivergent-inclusive education doesn't depend on individual heroics.

Who belongs here

Everyone.

This is genuinely a multi-perspective space. The most powerful ideas emerge when a parent names the gap, an educator explains the structural barrier, an advocate amplifies the community voice, and a policymaker sees the policy lever. That kind of cross-community systems thinking is exactly what this space is designed for.

No idea is dismissed because it came from someone without a formal qualification. The qualification we recognise here is experience — and every member of this community has it in abundance.

Not every idea arrives fully formed — and that's exactly the point. These are suggestions, proposals, and seeds of innovation submitted by community members. They may not yet be built. Some may never be. But all of them represent real thinking about what a better system could look like.

Seed idea — Helen's Way

Simulation education approaches for educator professional development

Healthcare has long used simulation-based training — immersive, scenario-led learning that builds real skill before professionals encounter real situations. The same approach could transform how we train new and existing teachers and principals to support neurodivergent learners: simulating what it feels like to experience sensory overwhelm in a classroom, practising communication with parents of neurodivergent children, and coaching responses to common classroom challenges in a safe environment before they happen in real life.

Systems impact

Shifts professional development from information transfer to experiential skill-building — at scale, across teacher training programs and ongoing school-based PD. Builds genuine empathy and practical skills system-wide, rather than relying on individual educators seeking out their own understanding.

Innovative Solutions + Ideation

Suggest a systems innovation.

If you have an idea — something you've tried, witnessed, researched, or imagined — that could change how the system works for neurodivergent learners, we want to hear it.

There's no required format and no minimum expertise. The only question we ask you to hold in mind as you write is: could this work for more than one child, in more than one classroom?

Remember: we're looking for ideas that support and resource teachers and learning support officers — not ones that add more to their workload. The system should be doing the heavy lifting.
